From "I have to" into "I get to"

Trying to stop a compulsive behaviour feels bad. The addicted part of the mind (APOTM) has one job. It is on a mission to get you to engage in your compulsive behaviour.

Part of your mind really wants this one thing, and then another part of your mind wants to stop doing that thing. This is challenging.

However, many people deal with this problem from a defensive stance. They let the APOTM bully them into submission and don't understand it's tactics. The APOTM is shrewd and as smart as you are.

If you are smart, your APOTM will be very smart too.

Fortunately though, once you have learned it's tactics and understand it's every ploy - you can start to take back control by dealing with the APOTM in the right way. You get on the attack and start to rewire your neural pathways correctly.

I woke up to a message from a client who is doing exactly this. I loved that he said "Got to experience a little discomfort last night." This client knows that every time he experiences that temporary discomfort, and deals with it in the right way (using his education and script) he is changing his neural pathways correctly.

Testimonial from a client saying "Hey Tom! That discussion left a good impression on me… regarding glamorizing the behavior and not needing a reason to engage. I marinated on that idea recently and it makes a lot of sense. Just wanted to say thanks!

All is well here. Enjoying the straight line. Got to experience a little discomfort last night. Woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep. Felt empowered to go anywhere without worrying about triggers and such. Just doing my thing and feeling in control. Proactive with the script and reminisced some ideas from our meeting."
